CSCU Wins Federal & State Approval of a Multi-Campus Hazard Mitigation Plan

The Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) has received state and federal approval of a Multi-Campus Hazard Mitigation Plan designed to help its
17 campuses and System Office reduce the risk of natural hazards and minimize vulnerabilities from identified hazards.

 “The CSCU system recognizes that natural and manmade disasters have the potential to cause extensive property damage and threats to campus safety and continuity of operations,” said CSCU President Mark Ojakian. “This plan illustrates our commitment to the safety of CSCU faculty, staff and students.”

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region I Mitigation Planning Team approved the CSCU Multi Hazard Mitigation Plan.

The plan will assist the CSCU campuses in identifying and reducing risks from natural hazards, identify actions that can be taken to prevent damage to property and loss of life, and prioritize state and federal funding for mitigation efforts and projects.

The Multi-Campus Hazard Mitigation Plan includes CSCU’s four state universities, 12 community colleges, Charter Oak State College and CSCU System Office at 61 Woodland St. in Hartford. The plan was made possible by a grant allocated by the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, the Division of Emergency Management, Homeland Security; and was funded by FEMA.

The Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan describes each campus’ vulnerability to various natural hazards that are present, along with actions and projects that can be undertaken to reduce key risks. While natural disasters cannot be prevented from occurring, the continued implementation of mitigation strategies identified in the plan will make CSCU campuses more sustainable and disaster resilient.
