Information for New Employees
Documents and information to ensure your employment gets off to a smooth start.
Onboarding
Welcome to CSCU! Now that you’ve received your initial offer, please take a few moments to learn about our onboarding procedures.
We invite you to explore the comprehensive State of Connecticut benefits available to you as an employee.
We want to ensure your pre-employment requirements are complete before you begin. This includes your pre-employment background screening as well as the new hire paperwork to get you onboard.
Instructions to get started were emailed to you when you received your offer. As email is a convenient way of communicating, please be sure to check your email (including your spam folder) regularly so you don’t miss important information. Review your welcome email for instructions to complete your background screening and your new hire paperwork.
Background Screening Process
Pursuant to the Board of Regents for Higher Education’s CSCU Pre-employment Background Verification Policy, all candidates identified for hire at CT State Community College must undergo a pre-employment background investigation as part of the employment screening process. You will need to submit to a criminal check, education check, and provide your employment history including your authorization to contact past employers for verification purposes.
Physicals/Drug Screening
If your position requires pre-employment physical or drug screenings, you will receive instructions to schedule the screening through Concentra. Please review your emails or contact your HR Recruiter or Generalist with any questions.
New Hire Forms
Instructions to complete your new hire forms were sent in your welcome email. If you have any questions regarding the paperwork, please reach out to your HR Generalist.
Retirement Election – IMPORTANT NOTE
As you review your new hire paperwork, please note that you will be required to make an irrevocable retirement selection on your first day. Please visit the State of Connecticut Comptroller’s retirement page for more information on plans available to employees of higher education.
For additional information regarding retirement options before you begin, consider attending our weekly retirement sessions. The retirement sessions review the retirement plans, eligibility requirements, application process, and answer most FAQs and live questions from participants.
Health/Dental Options
Your healthcare benefits enrollment will be sent after your hire date as we must wait for your State of Connecticut employment record to be created. The Benefits Specialist will send the generated forms to your work email address. You will have 30 days from your hire date to make your benefits elections and coverage will be effective the first day of the month following your hire date. For example, a hire date of 8/25 provides an effective 9/1 benefits date.
For additional information regarding insurance options before you begin, consider attending our weekly benefits sessions. The benefits sessions review healthcare plans and supplemental benefits. Topics include plan options, qualifying events, eligible dependents, how to use self- service in Core-CT as well as answer live questions from participants. Links on the State - Care Compass website will be reviewed.
Supplemental benefits are listed on the care compass website here: Supplemental Benefits - Care Compass (ct.gov) and the employee handbook (ct.gov).
Orientation
New hires to our system will be invited to attend orientation. New employee orientation is typically held on an employee’s first day, which aligns with the first day of a pay-period. The orientation provides an overview of the CSCU structure, human resources, payroll, benefits, IT support, and policies, as well as Title IX and diversity training.
Orientation is virtual and attendees will receive a link to attend prior to the scheduled start date. The schedule is 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Supervisors and new employees should discuss first day logistics for participation. Please note, if there is a low number of anticipated attendees, the orientation may be postponed until the following pay period.
