Dear CSCU Community,
On November 6th Connecticut will elect a new Governor and a new General Assembly. From that day until they are sworn-in in January, they will craft a new biennium budget, and put their policies into legislation to be enacted.
This presents us with the opportunity of presenting a vision for the future of CSCU. If we want the new administration to invest in our students and our institutions, we must show them who we are now, and why we are critical to the future of Connecticut. They must understand who our students are, the challenges they face, what we are currently doing to address those challenges, and what is needed to build a system that better serves them. This is a chance for us to provide a vision for CSCU for the next decade.
Over the next few months, CSCU will develop a white paper for the next administration. It is important that all voices are represented in this process. This process will solicit input from all of our campuses, the Faculty and Student Advisory Committees of the Board of Regents, and other stakeholders. The Board of Regents members will also share their perspectives and endorse the final version of the white paper before its submission to the new administration in November 2018.
The two primary goals are:
- Make the new Governor and Legislature aware of who we are, what role we play in Connecticut and the lives of its residents, and what our vision is for the future.
- Advocate for new initiatives and resources to help carry out that vision.
I have asked the leaders of your campuses to determine the process for how they will solicit your input. You will hear from them in the coming days and weeks about how your campuses will be responding, and how voices from students, faculty, and staff will be heard.
Candidates from across the political spectrum have talked about public higher education as a way to provide opportunity to our residents and help businesses grow. We should think boldly about what initiatives and investments the next administration can make to position our system for the future.
