College and Career Readiness Workshops Scheduled for October

This fall, Connecticut’s P-20 Council will host a series of regional one-day workshops on college and career readiness for education leaders.

This fall, Connecticut’s P-20 Council will host a series of regional one-day workshops on college and career readiness for education leaders. The workshops will be held at Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport on October 26, at Naugatuck Valley Community College in Waterbury on October 27 and at Manchester Community College on October 28, and will be facilitated by the Education Policy Improvement Center (EPIC).

The workshops are being conducted with the goal of helping to prepare every student in Connecticut for college and work. Statistics indicate that by 2010, about 41 percent of Connecticut’s public high school class of 2004 earned a postsecondary credential. By 2018, it is anticipated that 65 percent of all jobs in Connecticut will require some postsecondary training.

Meeting this demand requires collaboration among schools districts and postsecondary partners. Connecticut’s P-20 Council is a group of leaders from PreK-12, higher education, business, philanthropy, and community-based organizations working to improve coordination and alignment from early childhood education through postsecondary education and the workforce.

During the workshops, leaders from K-12 and higher education will:

Develop a shared understanding of “college and career readiness”
Analyze local data and information about student progress from high school into higher education
Learn about ways to align efforts across systems
Partner to advance the success of Connecticut’s students

Invitations are being sent to superintendents, high school principals, college and university presidents, provosts and deans in late September. Participants will be invited to the workshop in their region (see map). For more information, please email Ana Pagan at apagan@ctdhe.org.
