12 Students from the Connecticut State Universities Receive Henry Barnard Awards

Twelve outstanding students from the four Connecticut State Universities were honored by the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) Foundation with the prestigious Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Award.

The 12 students — from Central, Eastern, Southern and Western Connecticut State universities — were honored for academic excellence and community service at the 28th annual Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Awards banquet on April 17, 2018, at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville. The event’s keynote speaker was Scott Burrell, men’s basketball coach at Southern Connecticut State University.

Robert Bourne, president of the CSCU Foundation, said these 12 students are representative of the extremely hard-working students who attend CSCU universities. These students have excelled in the classroom and beyond, whether it’s through multiple degrees, research, study abroad or community service,” said Bourne. “They are the epitome of what makes a Barnard Scholar.”

The 2018 Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Award winners are:

Central Connecticut State University

Annabelle Bass, Moodus, double major in Psychological Science and Criminology, 3.90 GPA
Nilay Bhatt, Boston, Mass., Computer Science (Honors) and Mathematics major with a 3.76 GPA
Lilia Miller, Plainville, Civil Engineering major and Mathematics minor, 3.83 GPA
Quinton Swan, Suffolk, Va., Political Science major and minor in Community Engagement and International Studies, 3.86 GPA

Eastern Connecticut State University

Nadia Balassone, East Hartford, double major in Business Administration and English, 3.89 GPA
Yuberki Delgadillo, Quaker Hill, Biology major, 3.85 GPA

Southern Connecticut State University

Rebecca Harmon, Lebanon, Elementary and Special Education major and English minor, 3.75 GPA
Jessica Holman, Medfield, Mass., English major and Women’s Studies minor, 3.79 GPAKanita Miyedadi Mote, New Haven, double major in French and Political Science, 3.86 GPAKevin David Redline, Middlebury, Interdisciplinary Studies major and English and Professional Writing minor, 3.79 GPA

To be considered for a Barnard Award, a student must have at least a 3.75 GPA, a record of significant community service, and be nominated by their respective universities and presidents.  The CSUS Foundation is a nonprofit organization that supports education and research within the four state universities.

The award is named for Henry Barnard, Connecticut’s first superintendent of schools and principal of what later became Central Connecticut State University. Barnard was also the first U.S. Commissioner of Education.
